Dr Tony Yardley-Jones

Dr Tony Yardley-JonesFFOM FRCS(Ed.) FFTM(Glas.) PhD

Tony qualified in medicine at Liverpool University, training in general and neurosurgery before taking up a career in occupational medicine. He has subsequently worked with international businesses for over 20 years. His PhD is in Occupational Toxicology.

He is a consultant adviser in occupational medicine to several private and public sector organisations. He works privately for several organisations in the private and public sector and his private practice is based at London Bridge hospital and Harley Street. These referrals cover the full spectrum of occupational medicine issues, from stress management, performance issues and health screening and surveillance work with senior executives to consultations regarding redeployment or rehabilitation for employees with varying medical conditions.

Exposure to the extensive range of individual and corporate performance issues in business led Tony to develop a deeper understanding of the underlying physiological links and their impact on physical and mental well being at work. He is particularly interested in the role played by emotional mechanisms in the central nervous system in releasing creativity to optimise sustainable performance at both individual and business level in organisations.

As Chief Medical Adviser to Burmah Castrol, a multinational oil and chemical company, Tony headed a multi-disciplinary team providing occupational health, clinical, toxicology and risk assessment advisory services to the group on a worldwide basis. Following a merger, his most recent role in the corporate sector was as Medical Director to the CastrolGlobal business of BP. He was consultant to that business and Chief Medical Adviser to The Burmah Castrol Pension Fund until the end of 2002.

Earlier appointments in the field of occupational medicine provided experience in a wide range of businesses and areas within the Shell organisation. These included specialised chemicals, metals, oil refining, exploration and production, aviation and diving medicine, oil and chemical products, pesticides and plastics. During this period, Tony developed a research interest in the susceptibility of individuals to carcinogenic substances. His PhD is in the field of Genetic Toxicology and he is the author of several publications on occupational and experimental toxicology with a special interest in Benzene and aromatic solvents.

Tony is Lead Consultant in Occupational Medicine at the Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust, London, and was Director of Occupational Health and Consultant in Occupational Medicine at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, Reading.
